Homeschooling is changing. More specifically, it's diversifying.

I'm not just talking about the change from it being a primarily Christian movement to becoming more mainstream . . . I'm talking about different walks and needs entirely.

It used to be a Gideon's remnant: the few who felt called to do something different. Now, more people are homeschooling than ever before—ones who never would have thought it was possible. Some where both parents work full time to make it doable in this economy. Others who are dealing with major challenges with their kids and feel completely ill-equipped to do this alone but also have no other choice.

There are new scenarios that don't fit the typical mold, and no one is talking about it. Instead we create little clicks like a school cafeteria: based on homeschool styles, curriculum, and family dynamics that leave little room for the growing (and changing) faces of new homeschool families. Conventions are suffering. Community is suffering. And I believe change is on the horizon.

I've been watching for a long time. I've been praying and seeking the Lord and asking Him how we can meet the needs of families when those needs are so unique. This wrestling and watching and waiting are the very things that led us to create our new Online Academy this past year. And while I truly believe that is going to be an amazing solution to many in the market, there is still a growing number who are looking for more. Unconventional school models like hybrids and microschools are quietly popping up in every corner and passionate parents are creating unique solutions for the gaps they see.

It's Time to Build
